There’s never a perfect time to start a job search, but there is a right mindset: The journey is on. I found the picture above and thought it captured the current job market really well. But is it weird that the light on the sign isn’t on?

Even if you’re not actively looking for a new role… if you’re reading this newsletter, you’re starting to feel the itch. Maybe you’re craving a product you’re passionate about, a company that is investing more in marketing, having more agency over your work, or getting ready to CYA just in case anything happens. That itch is the start and something that can easily snowball. All you have to do is take one next step and start to build momentum.

Here’s 3 things you can do very early in your search (or before) to help set yourself up for success:

  • Get clear on what you want next. Not just title and comp. What type of team, company, product, manager, the list goes on. List out your absolute must haves, nice to haves, and what to avoid

  • Reconnect with your network (before you need them)

  • Build your brag book. Here’s what to include:

    • Metrics from key launches, campaigns, or projects

    • Revenue or leads generated specifically by your efforts

    • Quotes from managers, stakeholders, or customers praising your work

    • Major wins + challenges overcome

    • Links to public facing work or decks that you are able to share later

I’d recommend updating your brag book quarterly. Add a recurring 30 minute calendar block at the end of every quarter and write down your highlight reel. Future you will be very happy about this.

Why it matters:

  • You don’t have to rely on remembering all of your key accomplishments

  • You’ll be ready to nail interviews with specific, compelling stories

  • You’ll have ready to go content for your resume, LinkedIn and even for performance reviews

  • You’ll get a sense of what work you were most excited about and what opportunities you might gravitate towards next

If you are active in your search, you likely have already thought a lot about what you want next. Start to network with intention and build your brag book. It’s low(ish) effort and potentially high impact.
