For years, joining a “big tech” company was seen as the safe move. But the last few years have shown us that no company is immune from layoffs, not even the FAANGs or MATANAs (or whatever big tech acronym you like to use).

That means if you’re interviewing today, you need to go beyond evaluating the role itself. You should also be assessing the health of the team and the company. Find ways to get early signals about whether the department you’re joining is set up for growth or if there’s risk lurking around the corner.

Here are 4 questions to ask in your interviews:

1. How does this department contribute to the company’s top priorities?

2. What are the company’s growth metrics for the next 12–24 months, and how is this specific team measured against them?

3. Has this team grown, shrunk, or stayed flat in the last year?

4. What’s the current attrition rate on this team?
